Priya arrived in Tokyo with one suitcase and a job offer she barely understood the terms of. Her first month was convenience-store dinners and train-map panic — until a volunteer walked her to her ward office one Saturday morning.

Today she does both: she mentors new engineers through their first hard months, and she volunteers at language-exchange nights. “Someone held my hand once,” she says. “Now I get to be that someone.”
